Turning base metals into gold was the medieval alchemist's primary goal. Along the way, he accidentally discovered many kernels of knowledge that we take for granted in science today, but by and large he was generally in it to get rich quick or, as was often the case, help his sponsor get rich quick.

In that respect, not a lot has changed. I believe the modern pharmaceutical industry is a sham; selling the infirm and the elderly a chain of drugs, each to cover up a variety of symptoms as well as side effects induced by the medicine themselves, exchanging slavery for gold. Although there are many doctors who still follow the Hippocratic Oath, many unfortunately have become nothing more than sales agents for these drug companies, making big commissions off of "recommending" certain prescriptions, when they should be doing what is in the best interest of their patients. Treating the symptoms, not the sickness.

We are dealing with this issue on more than just a physical level, by the way. There are "alchemists" today who tend to treat symptoms of great problems in this society, rather than get down to the sickness, the core of the matter. Some think that if we can get people to talk about their pent up feelings or discover some hidden thing that happened to them as a youth, they will change. Some think that with enough laws and enough enforcement, people will behave in a civil matter. Some think that with the advance of technology and the sharing of many ideas, we can build a utopia on earth.

However, the real problem is that we're spiritually unhealthy, and there is only one cure for that: a relationship with Jesus Christ. "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases." (Isaiah 53:4) Yes, Jesus heals our bodies, but also our souls. "He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification."(Romans 4:25). Christ paid the price of death, and that is the remedy for our greatest ailment--sin.
